Pat Harkleroad, at 77, received profound and heartfelt thanks from one of her elementary students from some 40 years earlier. Ana Reyes was 6 years old when she attended Pat’s class at Wilder Elementary School in Louisville, Kentucky. She struggled with English since it wasn't her native language. Pat recognized Ana’s difficulties so she came to school early every day to help Ana get caught up with her studies.

Pat retired as a teacher at 62 and then went on to work with a local nonprofit dedicated to helping adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Ana graduated from Harvard Law and earned her M.A. in international policy from John Hopkins. She's now a successful lawyer. She attributes much of her success to Pat’s scholastic assistance and to Pat’s living example of compassion and service. Ana managed to find Pat with the help of the Kentucky Department of Education and present her thanks in person, much to Pat’s teary and astonished delight.
