Meet “Amazings” Whose BFF-Ship Transcends Tragedy And Time

Betty and Ana Maria were reunited by Zoom, 82 years after their tearful separation.

Betty Grebenschikoff and Ana Maria Wahrenberg, both 91, were best friends, true BFFs, when they were youngsters growing up in Berlin. It was not, however, a good place to be if you were Jewish during WWII, and the girls were separated when their respective families were forced to flee Germany to survive. Heartbroken, the 9 year olds vowed to remain best friends forever.

Unfortunately, as the years passed, they lost touch with each other. But, through an astonishing series of circumstances involving the persistence and “detective” work of Ita Gordon, an indexer for the USC Shoah Foundation and the Foundation itself, Betty and Ana Maria were reunited by Zoom, 82 years after their tearful separation. Now their tears are joyful ones – BFF-hood restored.
