Joao Carlos Martins, at 80, has a new lease on life – his piano playing life that is. Long considered one of the world’s most accomplished classical pianists, in particular in his interpretation of Bach, Joao has had an unfortunate series of accidents, degenerative disease, surgeries, and traumatic injury to his hands.

With only partial use of his hands, for many years Joao could only conduct and finally that too looked increasingly impossible. However, with the help of a friend who developed for Joao a specially configured pair of bionic gloves, Joao has been able to return to his beloved piano, playing with all 10 fingers for the first time in 2 decades.

Although Joao’s return to perform at Carnegie Hall in 2020, which would have marked the 60 year anniversary of his first performance there, was prevented by the pandemic, Joao looks forward with enthusiasm to furthering his already astonishing piano-playing career.
