James B. Newman was a stonemason who was originally from England. An online biography states that Newman can be credited for work at the Tulocay cemetery in Napa, the Napa State Hospital, various stone bridges in Napa County and many buildings in San Francisco and the region. He and others were said to have operated a quarry east of Napa, selling pavers used on the streets of San Francisco. Newman also reportedly served as a school board member and was on the city council.
