The Bay Area Air Quality Management District issued a Spare The Air alert for Saturday, effectively banning wood burning for the day.Ā
District spokesperson David Libby said the reason for the burn ban is that, "A high pressure system with dry, still conditions has settled in overĀ the region and will causeĀ airĀ pollution to build up to unhealthy levels again on Saturday.ā
During the day, itās illegal to use fireplaces, outdoor fire pits, or any other wood-burning devices.
Jack Broadbent, executive officer of the district, acknowledged that this season has been particularly active for his company.Ā
āThis seasonās thirtieth WinterĀ SpareĀ theĀ AirĀ Alert tiesĀ theĀ record set in 2006,ā Broadbent said. āAir pollution has been a serious problem during this dry, stagnant winter and itās important that residents refrain from burning wood to protect public health in their neighborhoods, communities and throughoutĀ theĀ region,ā he added.
Violations of the burn ban come with a $100-$500 ticket.
