Car Collides With Bicycle, Seriously Injuring Cyclist

Streets were closed to allow first responders to help the survivors.

A car collided with a bicyclist on Stevenson Boulevard Friday afternoon, forcing Newark Police to reroute traffic.

At about 2:45 p.m., police officers responded to reports that a gold Honda Accord had collided with a bicycle on Stevenson Boulevard by Cherry Street.Ā Ā  Only one person was in the Accord, according to Newark Police.

Police are investigating the reason the car collided with the cyclist, according to Sergeant Lee, Newark Police Department’s on-duty watch commander. Ā The cyclist was seriously injured and taken to a nearby hospital, where he is expected to recover from his injuries. His name is being withheld to protect his privacy.

Investigators do not suspect alcohol or drugs were a factor, according to Sergeant Lee.

Westbound traffic on Stevenson Boulevard and southbound Cherry Street were being rerouted as of 5:38 p.m. The roads are expected to open at about 6 p.m.
