Highway 84 Officer-Involved-Shooting: Officer, Suspect Identified

The shooting is being investigated by the California Highway Patrol.

NEWARK, CA — An officer-involved-shooting on Highway 84 on March 24 closed roads and snarled Newark traffic for hours.

On Wednesday, the Fremont Police Department released the names of both the officer and the suspect, who died.

Officer Brian Burch is a six year veteran of the department who is currently assigned to the Traffic Unit.

The armed robbery suspect killed in the shooting has been identified as Joshua James Gloria, 34, of Oakland.

The shooting happened in the area of Highway 84 and Ardenwood Boulevard, in the jurisdiction of the California Highway Patrol. An update on the investigation is not immediately available.

The day of the shooting, the CHP said in a news release that the shooting happened "following a pursuit that ended on eastbound SR-84, west of Newark Boulevard. The vehicle being pursued had been reported stolen and was associated with an armed robbery. The suspect, who was in possession of a firearm at the time of the incident, sustained fatal injuries."
