Illegal Fireworks Seized By Police, Man Arrested

The man faces a fine of up to $1,000 and up to six months in jail.

NEWARK, CA — Police in Newark who were on special detail for illegal fireworks suppression this week ended up seizing several mortar-style fireworks after observing three teenagers lighting them off.

The officers made contact with the teenagers Wednesday evening in the area of Cherry Street and George Avenue. Police said the officers made contact with an 18-year-old man and two teenaged boys. After a follow-up search conducted at the residence of one of the three turned up the discovery of additional illegal fireworks, the man was arrested for a health and safety code violation, which results in a fine of up to $1,000 and up to six months in jail.

The illegal fireworks were confiscated for destruction and the man was issued a citation and released.

Addressing residents' concerns about illegal fireworks in the city, the Newark Police Department is conducting undercover operations to enforce firework violations.

The so-called "safe and sane" fireworks are allowed in Newark, but only from midnight June 30 to midnight July 4.
