The City of Newark and the Newark Chamber of Commerce launched the Newark eGift Card Marketplace to help support Newark’s local businesses towards a quicker recovery from COVID-19.
“Newark chose this program because it helps businesses who have suffered through the pandemic and because everyone in our community can safely buy gifts and support our merchants,” said Steven Turner, Community Development Director. “This is a time to pull together. This is one way to help.”

This eGift Card program delivers two big benefits to businesses: it gets cash to businesses when the card is purchased AND, it is an online marketing tool. “This is the first program that truly benefits small business owners,” said Lion Food Center property manager Fallon Tran. “It really helps because the small business holds the money, not a third party.”
Local sponsors who stepped forward to fund the bonus gifts include the City of Newark and Lion Food Center. Sponsorships, bulk and corporate purchases are encouraged. Call Anne Stedler at City of Newark: 510 468-7368 for information.
Yiftee, Inc., a Menlo Park-based company launched the eGift Cards and Marketplace in 2012 to benefit small businesses. Yiftee now supports eGift Cards for over 125 communities across America and more than 8,000 local businesses. “We are proud to be a part of communities like Newark and Fremont where we can provide a platform to help their local shops and restaurants get through the pandemic. We see amazing individuals, companies and cities stepping up with purchases and matching gift funds to make sure the unique character of their cities is preserved through their local businesses. We commend the highly diverse and dedicated team behind the Newark Marketplace that is engaging night and day in multiple languages to bring this to their community,” commented Donna Novitsky, Yiftee co-founder and CEO.
Research shows that 48% of every dollar spent at businesses headquartered locally remains in the local economy, while 14% of every dollar spent at national businesses stays local.
“This is a unique opportunity for small businesses in our community to keep their businesses alive,” said Richard Lipsit, member of Newark’s Chamber. “EGift Cards let our community show support person by person, shop by shop.”
