Police Advise You to Beware of Distraction Burglaries

Authorities say scam-like burglaries tend to rise during the holidays.

Distraction burglaries are can be more prevalent during the busy holiday season. These types of burglaries use a ruse or scam to be invited into your home then the crime occurs. This type of crime is mostly targeted at seniors. 

Remember, don’t allow strangers into your home, especially if you didn't schedule or request any type of service such as utilities, tree trimming, and home inspectors. Be aware of those whom are inquiring about the neighborhood and the whereabouts of your neighbors. Questions such as, “Are they at work?” “On vacation?” or similar questions should make one guarded. 

Report suspicious activity to the Newark Police Department and attempt to obtain as much information regarding the incident like the subject’s description, vehicle make/model, license plate and the direction they left. Observant neighbors are essential in keeping neighborhoods safe and deterring crime. Please get to know your neighbors and share safety information.
