Street Closures In Newark Saturday, Sunday
The 97th annual Newark Holy Ghost Festival is happening, with parades and other festivities.
NEWARK, CA — Newark's Holy Ghost Festa is taking place this weekend, an annual celebration of Queen Isabel of Portugal. The festival will prompt multiple street closures on Saturday and Sunday.
The festival honors Queen Isabel, who was devoted to the poor. According to legend, she would hide food in her robe and sneak it out of the castle to give to the needy. Her husband, the king, did not share her views. One day, he stopped her and asked what she was carrying under her robe. She responded "roses," which were out of season at the time. But when she opened her robe, the bread had changed to roses. The incident is known as "The Miracle of Roses" and Queen Isabel was deemed the "Queen Saint Isabel of Portugal."
The Newark Police Department reports the following planned closures.
