Fill Out Your Census, Newport Beach! City's Response Rate Lagging

Only 60 percent of residents have completed the 2020 questionnaire, ranking Newport Beach 376th of cities statewide.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA — The U.S. Census Bureau is urging Newport Beach residents to complete the questionnaire, as only 60 percent of locals participated in the survey as of July 28, according to officials.

The 60-percent response rate lands Newport Beach at 376th out of 482 incorporated cities throughout California, the government said.

"And for every person who does not respond," officials added, "the California Department of Finance estimates that state and local governments will lose out on $1,000 a year in federal funding tied to population for the next 10 years."

Nationwide and throughout the Golden State, responses to the 2020 Census, so far, are logged at a household-response rate of more than 62 percent — with answers either online or by phone, or by mail for those who received paper questionnaires in the mail or on doorsteps, the agency said.

Result counts from the 2020 Census are used for such critical, public-service funding decisions as emergency and disaster response, schools and education programs.
