Good Samaritans Help Rescue 14 From Sinking Ship In Newport Beach

The 41-foot boat began to sink, just outside Newport Harbor, officials say. As the harbor patrol arrived, helpers were already at the scene.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA — A 41-foot Carver vessel reported taking on water Sunday afternoon just outside of Newport Harbor, the Orange County Sheriff's Department reported.

Good Samaritans were already at the scene when Harbor Patrol deputies got there. One boat was towing the sinking ship that was "almost submerged," according to Carrie Braun of the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

All 14 passengers on board the sinking vessel jumped into the water and were quickly saved by Harbor Patrol, Newport Lifeguards and Good Samaritan vessels at the scene. They were all taken to the Harbor Patrol offices to be cared for, and no one was injured in the incident.

It is not currently known what led the boat to sink.
