"The Need To Grow" Film Features OC Activists, Farmers

What would you do if you learned there were only 60 years of farmable soil left on the planet? "The Need To Grow" opens OC residents' eyes.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA — One of this year's most challenging films will show at the Newport Beach Film Festival.

A recent winner of the Sonoma International Film Festival's "Best Documentary 2018," filmmakers Rob Herring and Ryan Wirick will have you question everything you thought you knew about the food industry and farming with their startling new feature "The Need To Grow."

Orange County residents, including Lake Forest resident and student Alicia Serratos, took part in the project for her work in school gardens. Serratos is no stranger to doing good for others. She designs Lego themed jewelry and brings Legos to Ugandan children. Now, working with the Girl Scouts, Serratos began a petition for Girl Scout Cookies to be made with non-GMO ingredients.Over 45,000 people signed her petition, which garnered the attention of filmmakers.

"She has raised money for her school’s Organic Garden, raised awareness about endangered animals, participated in many recycling projects, helped organize food and toy drives for those in need and more. She exemplifies what it means to be a Girl Scout. She has also researched a lot about GMOs," her mother said.

Whether issues surround GMOs or what is happening to usable, sustainable soil, this film will open your eyes as to not only the problems that exist for anyone who consumes food (everyone) but also will provide some encouraging thoughts on what we can do about improving the lives of the next generation to come.
