New Corona Del Mar Park Opens On 5th Avenue
After undergoing a $6.3 million renovation, the park reopened Wednesday. And who was Grant Howald, anyway?

CORONA DEL MAR, CA — The $6.3 million year-long renovation of Grant Howald Park is complete.
On Tuesday, the city of Corona Del Mar held a ribbon-cutting for the park's reopening.


"The park was developed in 1954, named for Grant Howald in 1958 (in recognition for his contributions to youth recreation facilities) and conveyed to the City in 1972," city spokesperson John Pope said.

A Community Youth Center was added in 1998 and renovated in 2008.

- A complete rebuild of the playground, improving accessibility between play structures
- Addition of a synthetic, multipurpose sports field allowing for year-round play and saving about 2 million gallons of water a year
- Beautification of 5th Avenue frontage with new fencing, landscaping, removal of utility poles, and a new sidewalk
- New LED sports lighting with significant monthly utility savings and reduction of glare to nearby homes
- Landscape improvements that include 45 trees, 968 shrubs/ground cover plants, more than 16,000 square feet of lawn, and a water-wise garden
- Improved connectivity of walkways and security lighting throughout
- Restroom and parking lot upgrades
