Newport Beach Boys Swim To Place At Sunset League Finals, 2018

Los Alamitos High School swimming Griffins set new Orange County records in the sprint relay, Newport & Fountain Valley also showed well.

NEWPORT BEACH, CA — Los Alamitos High School swimmers had a huge showing at the Sunset League finals last week. Both Boys and Girls swim teams made a clean sweep of the Sunset League finals, with Newport Aquatics Boys and Fountain Valley High School Girls placing second.

The Los Alamitos Griffins 200 free relay team set new records on Friday at Golden West College, where the four swimmers skimmed the water to the tune of 1 minute 22.99 seconds.

Brandon Toland led with 20.84 seconds, Sullivan Moore with 20.85, Abe Marvel at 20.72 and anchoring the group, Gabe Browning swam for the finish with 20.58 seconds.

According to the Orange County Register, this record time beat Capistrano Valley's 2013 record of 1:23:10 by over one-tenth of a second.

The Griffins overtook runner-up Newport Harbor by nearly 2 seconds and also set a sunset League meet record.

"It was epic," Coach Danna told the Register. "These guys surpassed all of my expectations. We swam lights out."

Other notables included Brandon Toland's performance int he 50 free finals, where he moved into the 3 spot in Orange County's record books with a time of 20.33, outswimming Huntington Beach's Grant Brehm, in a meet record.

Toland has not yet committed to a University program, according to the Register. Olympic swimmers Michael Cavic of Tustin-2002 holds the number one spot with 19.69, and Derya Buyukunco of Woodbridge in 1994 still holds number two with 20.27.
