O.C-Based El Pollo Loco Intent On Reviving Latino Mural Heritage

ORANGE COUNTY, CA — After a loss of roughly 60 percent in recent years of historic, Latino murals throughout Greater L.A., Costa Mesa-based El Pollo Loco is determined to revive and restore the unique art form, including one unveiled this week on the side of the restaurant chain's original location in MacArthur Park in Los Angeles, according to company officials.

"The loss of murals also means a loss of culture and a severed connection to a communal heritage," the business said. "El Pollo Loco is thrilled to continue to use its restaurants as the canvases to connect a new generation with the Latino experience to the heart of Los Angeles."

This latest work, at 503 S. Alvarado St., an El Pollo Loco locale that opened almost 40 years ago, was completed by local Latino artist Juan Hector Ponce, who chose to showcase a woman sharing her culture through dance.

“Over 81 percent of our workforce at El Pollo Loco is Hispanic, which is why we’re passionate about celebrating and preserving our Mexican-American roots in the diverse communities we serve," said Bernard Acoca, El Pollo Loco president and CEO. “We also look forward to unveiling our next mural in early 2020, with more to come.”
