Relatives Testify on Behalf of Dead Bicyclist

An Emerald Bay man, 20, is in court for the death of the Laguna Beach victim.

An Orange County Superior Court judge heard Monday from relatives of a bicyclist killed in a Laguna Beach hit-and-run a year ago as he weighs a plea bargain for the man charged in the victim’s death.

Dylan Thomas Randluby, 20, of Emerald Bay, was ordered to return to court Oct. 19, when he may accept a plea deal from Orange County Superior Court Judge Robert Fitzgerald, according to Deputy District Attorney Stephen Cornwell.

Randluby is charged with felony hit-and-run with injury as well as misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence.

The terms of the possible plea deal were not publicly disclosed. Randluby could face two, three or four years behind bars if convicted at trial, Cornwell said.

According to prosecutors, Randluby was driving a 2005 Toyota Prius north on North Coast Highway just before 7 p.m. June 17, 2014, when he swerved for unknown reasons and his vehicle struck 55-year-old John Greg Colvin in the bike lane.

Randluby kept driving north on Coast Highway until he stopped in the parking lot at El Morro Elementary School at 8681 North Coast Highway, according to Laguna Beach police Capt. Jason Kravetz.

Two motorists called 911 and followed Randluby until he pulled over, Cornwell said.

Colvin’s liver was lacerated in the collision, and the windshield of Randluby’s car was shattered, Cornwell said.
