NEWPORT BEACH, CA— Defective traffic lights were causing backups for morning commuters in Newport Beach, officials say.

The lights at Newport Boulevard and Rockhurst Avenue were out, causing a traffic backup in the area as of 9:45 a.m., California Highway Patrol reports.
