Two Hospitalized After Bees Attack

A roofer disrupts a hive; he and a man across the street pay the price in Costa Mesa.

Thousands of bees swarmed on a roofing contractor and another man across the street in Costa Mesa today, landing both victims in a hospital.

A man working on a roof at a home in the 880 block of Laird Place apparently disturbed a hive of bees that attacked him about 8 a.m., Costa Mesa Fire Battalion Chief Bill Kershaw said.

A man from across the street also was stung multiple times, Kershaw said.

The victims -- who both complained of breathing problems -- were taken to area hospitals, Kershaw said.

Firefighters sprayed foam on the bees to subdue them until workers from Bee Busters could arrive to remove the hive from under the roof, Kershaw said.
