ORANGE COUNTY, CA — Duck Donuts, a nationwide franchise with Orange County locations in Irvine and Huntington Beach, is rolling out the company's first "made-to-order" vegan doughnuts on Nov. 1, which coincides with World Vegan Day.

The doughnuts can be purchased in-store or online from the shops at 18591 Main St. in Huntington Beach and 2222 Michelson Drive in Irvine.

“Since we opened in 2018, we have received many requests from customers for a vegan donut, which speaks to the consumer demand and lifestyle preference of those in Orange County,” said Gary Kopel, Orange County franchisee. “We are very excited to be the first Duck Donuts market to expand our product offering with the introduction of our new vegan donut.”

The vegan, cake-based doughnut melds a lightly spiced taste with a soft texture and allows patrons to customize with a variety of vegan-friendly coatings, toppings and drizzles, eatery managers said.

The vegan donut drew positive responses from customers during a pilot phase at the Huntington Beach and Irvine locations held earlier this summer, company officials said, adding that the business looks to expand the vegan donut to additional markets in 2020.

"As the U.S. vegan consumer industry continues to rise, so does the demand for an accessible and tasty vegan product," said Russ DiGilio, Duck Donuts founder and CEO. "After much research, trial and error, and in-store testing, we are ready to launch our first alternative donut base option, allowing us to reach a new audience of customers who can now enjoy our warm, delicious donuts, in the same unique, made-to-order atmosphere.”

North Carolina-based Duck Donuts prides itself on its warm, made-to-order donuts with such toppings as sprinkles, powdered sugar, lemon frosting, cinnamon-sugar or maple icing with bacon. In California, locales are in Huntington Beach, Irvine and Encinitas.
