CHATSWORTH, CA — It has been 133 years since George R. Crow filed a map of a subdivision called Chatsworth Park with the Los Angeles County Recorder's Office, laying the groundwork for the present day neighborhood.

This week, Ann and Ray Vincent of the Chatsworth Historical Society gave a presentation commemorating the neighborhood's 1888 foundation. The presentation can be viewed using the video player below.

Before its founding, the area that is now Chatsworth was inhabited by Native Americans, including the Fernandeño and Chumash tribes. The original inhabitants sustained themselves by hunting, fishing and gathering nuts and seeds, according to the historical society's website.

Spanish explorers entered the San Fernando Valley, including the Chatsworth region, in 1769. Later, by 1797, the San Fernando Mission was established by Fray Fermin de Lasuén and three other families, according to the historical society.

The mission system came to an end in 1821, and mission lands were sold off in 1834.

The area saw many more iterations before Crow's map was filed in 1888. According to the historical society, the original map divided the area into 10-acre tracts of land. The original plan for Chatsworth included only three states: Ben Porter Avenue, Devonshire Avenue, and Fernando Avenue

By 1915, Chatsworths' residents voted to become part of Los Angeles, and by the 1920s, the area was the backdrop for many western movies.

After World War II, the area grew rapidly, and subdivisions and industry entered the area over the course of the next 40 years. Today, Chatsworth is home to 50,219 residents in approximately 18,116 homes, according to Point 2 homes.
