LWV Forum: "Initiative and Referendum in California: A Legacy Lost?"

The League of Women Voters Los Angeles (LWVLA), in partnership with the Beverly Hills Bar Association, will host a forum to explore the pros and cons of California's initiative and referendum process. Topics include the history of the process, the current situation, and issues related to California's approach to Direct Democracy in today's political climate. MCLE credit will be awarded for attendance at this event.

This forum, which is part of a League of Women Voters of California study of the current process, will be presented in two locations: one in the San Fernando Valley on January 17 at Temple Judea in Tarzana, and one in Los Angeles at the League of Women Voters headquarters, 3303 Wilshire Boulevard, Suite 826, on January 19, 9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The morning session (9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon) is open to the public and will address the history, current process, issues related to the process, and alternatives for change. It will be followed by a League meeting at approximately 12:00 noon as League members seek to reach consensus regarding the current process and if changes should be made. This session is open to the public for observation only; League members will discuss issues and proposals for change with the goal of reaching consensus on a position for submission to the League of Women Voters of California.

Election-law expert Professor Jessica Levinson will be the keynotespeaker at the January 17 session and Pulitzer Prize-winning Los Angeles Times journalist and Michael Hiltzik will be the keynote speaker at the January 19 meeting.
