Fire Breaks Out At Northridge Home Appearing To Grow Cannabis

NORTHRIDGE, CA — Firefighters extinguished a fire in a Northridge home that appeared to be involved in a cannabis growing operation, the LAFD reported.

The fire was reported at 6:57 p.m. Wednesday at a garage of a 1937-square foot, one-story home on the 17300 block of Nordhoff Street. 26 firefighters took 12 minutes to arrive and extinguish the fire, according to an LAFD report.

Residential portions of the home appeared to be involved with a cannabis growing operation, firefighters said. Though a generator with a large fuel tank was discovered in the burning garage, the cause of the fire and legality of the grow operation remain under investigation.

No injuries have been reported.

This is not the first time firefighters have found grow operations inside burning homes in the Northridge area. In January, firefighters extinguished a fire at a commercial building in Reseda housing a grow operation, and in July, fire damaged a garage at the 18000 block of West Parthenia street in Northridge also housing an apparent grow operation.

The city of Los Angeles allows anyone over the age of 21 to grow up to six marijuana plants on their property.
