NORTHRIDGE, CA — A 30-year-old mother of six died from complications of the coronavirus this week after giving birth to her youngest son while hospitalized with COVID-19, according to several news reports.

Wilber Gomez told ABC7 his wife, Ashley Gomez, was taken to a hospital when her mild COVID-19 symptoms worsened. While in the hospital, Ashley underwent an emergency C-section for her newest son, Corey, on Dec. 20.

Before her death, a relative of Ashley started a GoFundMe account to help pay for medical bills and family expenses while she was hospitalized.

“ This has struck our family to the core and have done nothing but pray for a full recovery,” campaign founder Valerie Wolff wrote on GoFundMe. “The last year and a half has been such a nightmare. The father to her two youngest sons, died of a heart attack. Eight months later her sister died of an overdose. Now she is fighting for her life.”

Wolff announced Ashley’s death on Jan. 3.

“We are heartbroken to say, our beautiful Ashley lost her fight,” Wolff wrote. “Devastated is an understatement. Please, now more than ever, if you can give, any amount would be appreciated. And please, keep her beautiful boys in your prayers.”

Ashley’s sons shared memories of their mother with KTLA, telling the news station Ashley worked hard to provide and care for her family.

“I really loved how she dealt with work and always found some time in her day to help us with either school or have some time to hang out with us. She always found a way in her day to make ours better,” 110-ear-old Ryan told KTLA. “I would call her a hero and a savior to those she took care of.”

“When I have some trouble with some stuff, mama helped me,” 8-year-old Zachary told the news station.

As of Thursday afternoon, the GoFundMe campaign had raised $41,351 of its $60,000 goal.
