Project Elevate Helps Chatsworth Students With School Costs

A pilot initiative is targeting struggling students who don't qualify for aid pay for college application and testing fees.

CHATSWORTH, CA — Being a college-bound student can be expensive: in addition to staggering tuition, there are costs to buy books, take tests, write applications, travel to and from school - the list goes on and on, and can add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Many students and their families struggle under the weight of rising costs, but don’t meet the income threshold to receive aid.

The many students who find themselves in this position can look to Project Elevate, a pilot program awarding $25,000 worth of grants and fees to help Chatsworth students in that position pay testing and application fees. The program is sponsored by Chatsworth Charter High School, Local District Northwest-LAUSD, Councilmember John Lee, and nonprofit the Change Reaction.

“We never want someone’s financial situation to be a hindrance to their success, so we get to proudly launch our newest program, Project Elevate, here at Chatsworth High School that will help them,” Lee said at the launch at Chatsworth High School.

“The Change Reaction is really about ensuring that for Angelenos, emergencies don’t become catastrophes, which can happen very quickly when you don’t have a financial safety net,” said Change Reaction President Wade Trimmer. “You can’t think of a more worthy group of young people than people who are working hard, studying...our investment is so worthwhile to see a young person pursue their dreams and goals.”

“This amazing donation from Project Elevate has helped myself and many Chatsworth students relieve our stress by removing some of the financial obstacles in our path,” said aid recipient Maya Darghali. “My fellow classmates and I are thrilled to be recipients of this program and hope the benefits of this program will continue supporting us and future Chancellors in our journey to higher education.”
