Science Center to Open in Vacant Valley Children's Museum

The popular Orange County attraction will take over the empty $21.8-million building at the Hansen Dam Recreation Center.

Discovery Science Center of Orange County is expanding into a second facility in the San Fernando Valley.

The popular attraction will take over the vacant $21.8-million Children's Museum at the Hansen Dam Recreation Center. The city-built museum became a white elephant in 2007 when the Children's Museum of Los Angeles, which had operated a smaller downtown site, went under.

The Discovery Science Center will lease the 57,000-square-foot building for $1 a year, and save the city from losing $16.2 million it would have to pay back to construction funders if a museum fails to open by a March 2015 deadline.
