Tarantula Mating Season Begins, Hike Scheduled

A ranger-led hike on Rancho Sierra Vista trails will be held in hopes of spotting now active male tarantulas.

THOUSAND OAKS, CA - Rangers are beginning to notice an annual ritual. Male tarantulas have been seen crisscrossing trails in the Santa Monica Mountains in what appears to be a search of a mate. Females, which burrow underground, are known to await the males, but may reject some prospects.

To that end, a ranger will lead an easy sunset tarantula hike on Saturday, September 3 at 6:30 p.m. on the trails of Rancho Sierra Vista. There’s no guarantee the spider species will be seen during the walk, but a pet one will be on display.
