Update: Natural Gas Tanks Make Way for New Enlisted Quarters

Camp Pendleton officials say the gas tanks need to be vented prior to demolition.

Camp Pendleton residents and personnel may notice a rotten-egg smell between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Friday as technicians vent compressed natural gas tanks.

The tanks are being vented prior to demolition to make way for a new bachelor enlisted quarters project to be built in the area, public affairs officer Lt. Welsh told Patch. Naval Facilities Southwest is overseeing the venting of the tanks.

G Street in the 14 Area will be closed in the morning and as needed throughout the day, according to the base website.

Workers will use nonspark tools in the immediate area to avoid igniting the released gas. The base Fire Department will be on hand to monitor the process. Within 100-foot radius of the tanks, there is no threat of explosion, but smoking will be prohibited and the area will be closely monitored. Within a 1-mile radius, outside of the 100-foot radius, there is no health threat and no threat of explosion, but residents and personnel may hear a whistling sound.

Camp Pendleton Patch was unable to reach base public affairs before deadline. More information will be provided as it becomes available.
