A woman and a child died today when an SUV crashed into the back of tractor-trailer on Interstate 5 near San Onofre State Beach.
The northbound Chevrolet Suburban carrying the victims smashed into the supermarket cargo vehicle just south of the San Clemente Border Patrol Station in the Camp Pendleton area about 9:20 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

No other injuries were reported.
The collision left all northbound lanes in the area blocked for a time, causing gridlock for miles to the south. By 11:30 a.m., two lanes were open again, though a congestion alert for the area remained in effect, the CHP reported.

The victims' names were not immediately available.

At least one person died when a Chevrolet Suburban crashed into the back of tractor-trailer on Interstate 5 in the Camp Pendleton area today, authorities said.
The fatality in the No. 4 lane of northbound I-5, south of the Border Patrol checkpoint, was reported at 9:22 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
