Marine Combat Team to Deploy to Afghanistan

The Marine Corps' Regimental Combat Team 5 is gearing up for a one-year deployment to Afghanistan.

Marines with Regimental Combat Team 5, 1st Marine Division, will be departing for Afghanistan early Saturday morning, division spokesperson 1st Lt. Joshua Benson told Patch.

RCT-5 will take control of the region currently held by RCT-1 in southern Helmand province for one year, Benson said. RCT-1 will return to the U.S. following the transfer of authority.

Before departing, the Marines will stage their gear and say their goodbyes to attending friends and family. Look for Camp Pendleton Patch's video coverage of RCT-5's departure.
