CAMP PENDLETON, CA — A Navy service member was killed and five other service members were injured in a crash involving five military trucks Tuesday on Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton.
Five military trucks were traveling in a convoy shortly before 7 a.m. on southbound I-5, south of Basilone Road, when the convoy slowed down for unknown reasons and caused a chain reaction collision, according to the California Highway Patrol's Oceanside office. The crash pushed one of the truck trailers forward into the cab, fatally injuring the driver.
The 26-year-old serviceman was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the CHP. The other victims — three men and two women, all in their early 20s — were taken to Camp Pendleton Naval Hospital and Mission Hospital in Orange County for treatment.
