Oceanside Chart Of The Week: How Pandemic Left Thousands Jobless
Introducing the Oceanside Chart of the Week. This week we look at how the pandemic thrust thousands of O'siders into unemployment.
OCEANSIDE, CA — This week's Oceanside Patch Chart of the Week shows just how many people were thrust into unemployment during the pandemic, but offers a glimmer of hope as many of those who lost jobs in 2020 have since returned to the workforce.
The number of people who were employed in Oceanside reached about 80,000 at the start of 2020. Once the pandemic forced businesses to close their doors, that number dipped to about 70,000, according to publicly available data and charts published on Google Data Commons. That's the lowest it's been since about 2000.
The data showed about half of those people who lost jobs in 2020 have since returned to the workforce.
