Old Highway 101 Bike Path Closure Will Force Cyclists to Take I-5

Military explosives training exercises aboard Camp Pendleton will force cyclists to take portions of the Interstate Highway 5 shoulder lane through Thursday.

If you’re planning a bike ride on the Old Highway 101 bike path through Camp Pendleton on Wednesday and Thursday, you may be surprised to find it closed.

According to a California Department of Transportation press release issued Tuesday, the path will be closed during daylight hours on those days from Las Pulgas Road to the fence line at the southern boundary of San Onofre State Beach due to military explosives exercises in the area.

Bicyclists will instead be permitted to ride along the outside shoulders of Interstate Highway 5 between Las Pulgas Road and Basilone Road during the closures, but are asked to exit at all off-ramps to avoid collisions with freeway traffic.

Southbound cyclists must exit at the weigh station and at the vista point, and then re-enter the freeway shoulder, according to Caltrans.
