Explore the local history, local mysteries and backstories about Oceanside from Histories and Mysteries blog.

OCEANSIDE, CA — The historical Oceanside Pier is one of the most recognizable landmarks on the Southern California coast. The current pier is 1,942 feet long and was completed in 1987. In total there have been 6 different pier structures, with the first being constructed shortly after the city incorporated in 1888.
The first Oceanside Pier was actually a wharf and it was located at the end of Wisconsin Street, first named Couts Street (after Cave J. Couts, Jr., surveyor of the original townsite). Started in 1888 it was never fully completed. For the backstory on what happened to the first Oceanside Pier over 130 years ago, visit the Histories and Mysteries blog.
Histories and Mysteries is written by Kristi Hawthorne, President of the Oceanside Historical Society and author of “Oceanside, Where Life is Worth Living” detailing the history of the city from the 1880s, along with 275 historic photographs.
