Today Is National Navajo Code Talkers Day
On Aug. 14, 1982, President Ronald Reagan recognized a group of some 400 Native American service members for using their language to outsmart Japanese forces during WWII.
They were called "code talkers"—Navajo service members who used their native language to keep U.S. military communications from being intercepted and decrypted by enemy Japanese forces during World War II.
In this video interview produced by Sgt. Dean Davis, Marine field radio operator Lance Cpl. Devin Bidtah recounts his family's memory of his grandfather, Marine Corps code talker Leroy Johns.
