Toddler Chokes to Death at Oceanside School

A 3-year-old boy died Monday after choking on a pushpin at the Montessori School of Oceanside.

Tyler Howell, 3, of Oceanside, died Monday afternoon of asphyxiation caused by airway obstruction, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

The incident occurred at the , located at 3525 Cannon Road, just before 1 p.m., City News Service Reported.

His teacher noticed that the boy made a gasping sound, grabbed his neck and became unresponsive, she told authorities. Tyler is reported to have choked on a pushpin.

A teacher performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and paramedics were summoned to the preschool, a school official told Patch.

Paramedics took the boy to Tri-City Medical Center, where he died at 1:50 p.m.
