A short documentary about an ailing Huntington Beach boy's journey to space through virtual reality will be featured at the American Documentary Film Festival in Palm Springs this weekend.

"Child of the Earth” shows how virtual reality technology liberated 17-year-old Kevin from terminal illness and allowed him to experience joy. Unable to leave his home because of advanced cystic fibrosis, Kevin donned a VR headset and embarked on a mission to the International Space Station. The film is a warm and intimate portrait of a young man's journey beyond the confines of his broken body.

The short documentary features Dr. Scott E. Parazynski (NASA Hall of Fame astronaut), Dr. Glen Komatsu (Providence St. Joseph Health) and Evelyn Miralles (NASA). It illustrates how TrinityKids Care, one of the largest providers of pediatric hospice in the country, is using technology in service of humanity.
