A Littl Girl Pens A Happiness Poem. Ponies Win Over Pokemon

A Fourth Grader from Tustin Writes A Poem About being "Free"-- Free to Be Outside Running, Playing, Laughing and No Electronics In Sight.

(Orange Park Acres, Ca) -- A nine-year old little girl with long curly hair and sparkling Autumn colored eyes runs free each time she and her pony take to the riding arena in the small, cosy and safe Equestrian community of Orange Park Acres.

Surrounded by large towering Eucalyptus trees, the Santa Ana Mountains and blue skies dotted with white cotton candy clouds -- she rides.

And is free. In the outdoors. The sunshine. The comfort of her natural surroundings she's explored alongside her mountain bike loving Father, proud and Blessed stay-at-home dotting Mom, and two older sisters. Both who also share her beautiful dark curly chestnut tresses and Fall tinged eye color.

The young girl, a fourth-grader who is an academic powerhouse, sat in class this week in Orange County and listened as her teacher presented the days lesson: Poetry.

The teacher told the young children she was going to read aloud to them a Poem. The children were allowed to follow along in their school books or chose to sit and...listen.

The little girl chose to sit back, and listen. Listen to the words her teacher spoke in short sequence. Listen to the melody the words made when spoken together. In a new form of writing the children were learning about.

Poetry.

The children were next asked to write a Poem of their own. They could take out their pencils and blue-lined paper in class to write. And if they had not finished by the time the school bell rang, they could finish their Poetry at home.

So she did. Her Mother watched as her young daughter put her thoughts into a Poem for the very first time.

Later, the adoring Mom looked at what her daughter had created --- with her mind, and her life experiences of all of nine years:

I’m as bright as the sun,

I’m running free,

I laugh when I’m free,

I joke when I’m free,

I’m as energetic as a wild horse running free,

I’m happy when I’m free,

I’m as colorful as paint splattered on a canvas,

I feel as light as the wind,

I’m like water running in the ocean sea,

I’m as free as flowers growing in the wild,

I’m Free.

THE OUTDOORS BRING CHILDREN FREEDOM, A POEM REVISITED

The following day, the little girl who loves ponies, sunshine, flowers, and being ”free” --

provided insight to the meaning behind her ”Very First Poem Ever.”

”I think I wrote the Poem in about 15-minutes, ” she said, in a trademark childlike response....partially sure, partially thinking about the next activity she gets to do after the boring adult-peppered questions finish, and partially dreaming about swimming with friends, playing tag at recess and equally thinking about how many days until her next Birthday and summer. Oh. And Christmas too!

”The Poem was about a ”Mood”, ” she said, and started to giggle, as little girls are prone to do from time to time.

”For me, I am happiest when I am running around outdoors, ” she said. ”The thought about being happy and being outside came right into my head.”

”I just thought about what I mostly feel when I am outside, ” she added. ”I tried to make my thoughts into shorter sentences. Like the Poem our teacher read to us.”

HAPPINESS FOUND IN A POEM

As the young child reflected on the finished product she wrote, she admitted what came out of her and onto paper surprised her!

”I was impressed with what came out, ” she said, followed by more spontaneous-little-girl-giggles. ”It just came out!”

”I liked writing this Poem, ” she said decidedly. ”You just shouldn't think too much about what you are going to write. You just start writing!”

More giggles.

”And it will be good!, ” she exclaimed. So much more confident in her Poetry prose with just one Poem under her Academic Belt.

At nine.

And then she added a statement that clearly shows this little girl is wise beyond her years. Given years 1 and 2 she was learning how to sit, crawl, stand, walk and then run. Years 3 and 4 speech development and words. Year's 5 and 6 learning how to write, raise her hand in class to ask a question and understand how to be a student for the very first time. 7 and 8 saw some more difficult classroom instructions and concepts. And clearly, at 9, recess still rules.

”And don't think about what other people will think about what you write, ” were her Pearls of wisdom. Pearls adults spend a lifetime trying to acquire, but may never achieve.

But she has. At 9.

Then, more Pearls from a child. She encourages others to take up writing a Poem, even if they are afraid. Children instinctively want to be kind, nice -- and happy. And children don't think there is a shortage of happiness to go around -- so they are prone to wanting everyone else to be happy too!

Especially with new found gold like writing Poetry.

”Just sit down and write!” she explained. ”Anyone can write a poem. At any age. Just write...”

THE YOUNG POET SHARES WHAT HER POEM IS ABOUT

”The point of my Poem is that kids should get out of the house and not lock ourselves inside on our iPads and electronics, ” she said. This

time no giggles. It was all business suddenly.

”’I’m Free’ reminds everyone to put down the electronics!” she said.

”If I grew up spending all my time inside all day on an iPhone or iPad I wouldn't have been able to write that, ” she said. ”By being outside I know what that feels like.”

”I know the difference -- you're not in the sunlight, not experiencing happiness of just being a kid, ” she said, still all business.

”Kids are supposed to be able to have fun and be outside and not have to worry...” she said. ”... to be free.”

And be a child, she said. And giggled, again.
