IRVINE, CA — Taco Bell is upping its vegetarian and vegan-friendly menu options with the trial launch this weekend of its "Naked Chalupa with a Crispy Plant-Based Shell" — a new item that, for now, only is offered in a one-restaurant test — at a location in Orange County.

But, do note, that's only for a few days and while supplies last.

Product testing is underway through Sunday, June 27 at Taco Bell at 2222 Barranca Pkwy. in Irvine.

Priced at $3.49, this new Naked Chalupa features a shell with a proprietary, pea protein-based blend that’s breaded, shaped into the Chalupa form and then crisped. Diners can keep their orders vegetarian with such fillings as lettuce, cheddar cheese, tomatoes and avocado ranch sauce, or remove dairy or egg ingredients for a vegan option.

The shell is certified vegan by the American Vegetarian Association, according to Taco Bell. (Follow this link for product and preparation info.)

"By testing and offering a wide breadth of craveable alternatives to meat options, Taco Bell doubles down on its pledge to bring more innovation to the vegetarian space," company officials said this week.

Management did not say when the chain plans to expand the veggie-based item on menus nationwide. See details here.

As supplies may be limited, perhaps check with the Irvine eatery before heading out to purchase.
