SANTA ANA, CA — Fire officials dispelled rumors of a plane crash at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana Sunday morning. Firefighters were called to the airport due to a "suspicious odor," and no plane crash had occurred.

Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Sean Doran said the call came in at 9:20 a.m. of an odor coming from an unoccupied plane at an airport gate. Additional fire crews were called in, but canceled as the first crew to respond had the situation under control.

“The initial crew handled it and canceled the remaining assignment (fire personnel),” Doran said.

The OCFA received multiple calls wondering about a plane crash at the airport, the agency said. Specifically, at least one local Twitter user had tweeted "possible plane crash" at the airport around 9:30 a.m.

Doran did not immediately say what the odor turned out to be.
