Driver ID'd In Fatal OC Crash: Cops

A deadly crash closed a major freeway connector in Orange County Sunday morning. The driver was later identified.

TUSTIN, CA - One man has died as a result of a crash believed to be caused by excessive speed during a pursuit.

The driver, identified as 26-year-old David Grubbs of Tustin, perished early Sunday when the vehicle he was driving crashed on the transition from the northbound Santa Ana (5) Freeway to the southbound Costa Mesa (55) Freeway, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The car was traveling at "high speeds" went up an embankment before striking a tree before the driver was ejected.

Officers were in pursuit of the speeding vehicle when it careened off the roadway, according to media reports. The man was driving at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour, CHP said.

As of 7:30 a.m. the transition road remained closed while work continues to repair a guardrail that was damaged in the crash. It was expected to reopen by 10 a.m. CHP said.
