The crash took the life of pilot Jim De Varennes and his passenger, Jill Young.

PACIFIC PALISADES, CA — Palisades resident Jill Young was killed in the plane crash near Van Nuys airport on September 11, a coroner announced. The crash also took the life of 62-year-old pilot Jim De Varennes, owner of Palisades Roofing and Construction.

After attempting to take off from Van Nuys airport en route to Santa Ynez, the plane crashed in a small parking lot, narrowly avoiding several parked cars and nearby residential complexes. A witness reported seeing the plane make a near vertical climb, before stalling and nose-diving into the ground.

Nicholas Prange of LAFD said the plane was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, but that the fire was quickly extinguished. No other injuries were reported.
