Sunset Boulevard Flooded Due To Broken Water Main

Video footage showed several cars submerged underwater in a parking garage, while Sunset Boulevard remained closed Monday morning.

PACIFIC PALISADES, CA — Sunset Boulevard in the Palisades was impacted by flooding Sunday night, after a water main broke and damaged at least one apartment building. The broken water main was reported around 7:43 p.m. near Sunset Boulevard and Muskingum Avenue.

Nicholas Prange of the Los Angeles Fire Department said a "large volume of water" threatened multiple apartment buildings, with LAFD, LADWP, LAPD, DOT and the L.A. County Lifeguards working in tandem to reduce the flow. While crews were trying to assess the damage, one person was spotted in the water, whom LAFD was able to rescue without harm.

According to LAFD, no evacuations were needed as most of the damage was in the parking garage. Video footage showed several cars partially submerged under water due to the flooding.

Sunset Boulevard remained closed on Monday morning between El Medio Avenue and Muskingum Avenue while crews worked to pump water out of the garage and replace the broken water pipe.

“It’s about six feet of water. We’re going to go into what we call a dewatering, we’re gonna use our pumpers actually, create pressure and pump this water out, like I said we’ll put it in a suitable place down into the canyon or the storm drains and hopefully we’ll be back in operation shortly,”LAFD Battalion Chief Joe Everett told CBS. “DWP is working very, very hard to get this shut off and also get water back to the public here for their use.”
