PALOS VERDES, CA — A Los Angeles County lifeguard was recognized by Gov. Gavin Newsom Monday for his harrowing rescue of a swimmer caught in the Palos Verdes underwater caves.

L.A. County Fire Department Ocean Lifeguard Specialist Edward "Nick" Macko showed no hesitation when he helped pull a swimmer to safety despite rising surf, sharp rocks and incoming tide. The dramatic night rescue happened in August 2019, The Daily Breeze reported.

Macko is a 22-year veteran of the department and has described how dangerous the caves can be. If you run out of air, "it's a matter of minutes between life and death," Macko said.
