Plane Crashes Into Big Rig In San Pedro, Killing 1

A pilot died at the scene and another person was seriously injured when a small plane crashed into a truck in the Port of Los Angeles.

LOS ANGELES, CA — One person died and another was seriously injured when a single-engine plane crashed into a big rig in San Pedro at the Port of Los Angeles Friday afternoon.

The single-engine airplane crashed into a semi-tractor trailer truck in the 2500 block of South Navy Way at about noon, according to the Los Angeled Fire Department. Bystanders attempted to rescue the pilot from the wreckage of the plane, but he died at the scene, said Margaret Stewart, Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman.

"Bystanders pulled the patient from the wreckage and were directed in providing CPR via the LAFD 9-1-1 Dispatcher until LAFD firefighters arrived and assumed medical care," she said.

Paramedics rushed a man, who was in the truck, to a nearby hospital in "at least serious condition," she added. According to Stewart, the second victim is a man in his 30s. However, authorities have not publicly identified either victim.

Crews are working to contain a small amount of fuel that leaked onto the roadway during the crash.
