Supervisors Vote To Create New Department On Aging, Disabilities

In a unanimous vote Tuesday, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to create a new department on aging and disabilities.

RANCHO PALOS VERDES, CA — In a unanimous decision Tuesday, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted on a proposal authored by Supervisor Janice Hahn to create a new County Department of Aging and Disabilities.

Los Angeles County currently has 3.6 million seniors.

“Right now, our County’s older adults and residents with disabilities are served in some way by nearly all of our County's 35 departments,” said Supervisor Janice Hahn. “This fragmented approach makes it too difficult for people who need services and caregivers to figure out what department they need to go to. A new standalone Department of Aging and Disabilities would coordinate our efforts and allow us to be proactive in serving this growing population.”

Hahn’s motion asked the County’s Chief Executive Officer to work with relevant departments to begin the process of creating the new Aging and Disabilities Department, with phased implementation to begin before October 1st, 2021. Hahn's motion also asks for recommendations to the Board on potential final names for the new Department.

Hahn represents the county's fourth district, which includes Rancho Palos Verdes, Palos Verdes Estates, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Estates, Torrance, Marina del Rey, Playa del Rey, Catalina Island, among other South Bay and LA communities.
