The honors student graduated from high school on June 9. He died on July 2.

OAKLAND, CA — A memorial service was being held this morning for Darryl Aikens, a former star football player and honors student at McClymonds High School in Oakland who recently died of leukemia at the age of 18.
Aikens, who also played basketball and baseball, had just graduated from McClymonds on June 9. He died on July 2.
He was first diagnosed with leukemia almost five years ago and it went into remission for a while but returned in 2015, Oakland Unified School District officials said.

Last September, Darryl was said to be cancer-free, but it had come back by December.
School district officials said in a statement that Aikens "lived a lot longer than doctors thought he would considering the seriousness of his illness."

"Darryl was a strong young man who gave it all he had. The McClymonds community is devastated," district officials said.
The service for Aikens was held at the McClymonds High School auditorium at 2607 Myrtle St. in Oakland.
