Mural Of Palestinian Activist Causes Controversy In Oakland
The activist was convicted of a terrorist bombing that killed two people.
OAKLAND, CA — A controversial mural inside Oakland bakery Reem's California sparked a protest on Saturday.
Pro-Israel demonstrators gathered outside the bakery with homemade signs to protest the full-wall mural of Rasmea Yousef Odeh, a Palestinian activist convicted of murdering two Israeli students in a terrorist bombing in Jerusalem in 1969. Odeh later entered the US, hiding her criminal background. Following years of court battles, she was ordered deported earlier this year.
Reem's employees responded to the protesters by ripping signs from their hands, according to observers. The demonstrators called police, who ensured that things did not get further out-of-hand.
