New Census Report Offers Snapshot of Piedmont
A new American Community Survey report focuses on social characteristics, including household make-up and educational levels.

A new report from the U.S. Census Bureau depicts Piedmont as a stable city whose highly educated residents overwhelmingly live in family households and have resided in their home for at least one year.
"Selected Social Characteristics in the United States: 2008-2012 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates" offers an interesting glimpse of Piedmont but few surprises.
Some highlights from the report:
—Families comprise 86.3 percent of the city's estimated 3,653 households. An estimated 43.7 percent of households include children under 18, while 21.7 percent of households include at least one person age 65 or older.
—An estimated 3,696 residents are children age 3 and older who are enrolled in school or preschool. Of those, just over half are in grades 1-8.
—Of the estimated 3,679 males age 15 or older, 78.5 percent are currently married and living with their spouses. Among the 4,487 women residents, 63.9 percent are married.
—Among Piedmont residents age 25 and older, 98.5 percent have graduated from high school, 82.4 percent have a bachelor's degree and 47.3 percent hold a graduate or professional degree.
—92.5 percent of the city's residents lived in the same house a year ago; another 4.1 percent lived elsewhere in Alameda County.
—A total of 9,217 persons are U.S. natives, while 1,482 are natives of other countries. Among those born in foreign countries, 76.7 percent are naturalized U.S. citizens. The largest percentage of foreign-born residents, 71.9 perent, are natives of Asian countries.
